After successful commissioning and the completion of more than 500 operational hours all contract requirements for the 4 Jet vertical Pelton turbine at Floods Creek have recently been not only met but exceeded.
Design of this 6.5 MW hydro power station was particularly challenging and AIE overcame a number of complicated design issues to achieve this. The design required a 33km long penstock Deflector governing, over 600 meters of head, a bypass valve and a complex energy dissipation system with the aim of being able to bypass the station for maintenance requirements while still providing water to the irrigation scheme. The power station also needed to be able to cope with a number of line outages per year and still run the irrigation scheme pumping stations without interruption.
The success of this scheme was a very exciting achievement for AIE who led a consortium to undertake the entire ‘Water to Wire’ hydro contract. Read more below from the feature article in the April 2014 Edition of the Engineering Media’s WEA (Water Engineering Australia) Magazine.
